Management system. Some record rooms even involved a computerized system referencing the location of the requisite file in the shelves in the later part of this era. However this way of doing things has changed, managing files and folders has become counterproductive. Organizations that still stick to these methods of records management have resulted in not having the flexibility to change or scale operations. These operations in general, tend to be ineffective and highly resource dependent. Computer storage as a technology has also developed over the years since its inception, owing to the rapid growth of information and data that organizations have to handle on a daily basis. Operations, legislations and other factors have exponentially increased the need for storage systems and the speed and reliability at which they are required to operate in order to keep up with today?s fast paced climate. For medium to large scale operations and even some small operations now see the need to move from storage systems inside of servers. Internal storage is limited by the throughput of the server?s busses and is not flexible to scale in line with demand. More over since it is not centralized, management becomes a very daunting task when the number of servers grow.

Enter NAS/SAN Storage....! Ghana, being a developing nation has realized the fact that technology is one of the vehicles on which it can achieve rapid growth. However technology not implemented appropriately can tend to be very expensive. Most Organizations in Ghana design their IT infrastructure from the basics and then add to it when necessary. After a couple of years the entire design is dependent on the basic core which could be very old and not able to handle the current data throughputs. In terms of storage, most organizations purchase servers with internal storage. This works well until more servers are purchased and then hard drives begin to grow old and start failing. Administrators have to manage storage independently on all systems, in large environments this could be close to impossible. Implementing Storage Area Networks or Network Attached storage for less dependent systems has a high cost associated, we at Flint advice that these cost should only be incurred if the organization can really identify the benefits that the new storage solution will provide to it. One of these benefits includes better disk utilization. In a storage system, LUNs are created from the physical hard drives in the storage system. These LUNs can span multiple disks and can be configured in varying raid levels.

This ensures that the administrator has maximum control over disk utilization. Disk space can be used efficiently thereby cutting down costs. Storage Systems enable critical data to be stored independent from the servers that use this data. When the servers crush or go down recovery to production state is a quick and easy process since the LUNs that contain this data are already allocated on the storage system. Backups can also be done from the centralized storage system. Backing up the entire storage system or the relevant LUNs ensures that all important data is safe guarded. In contrast to internal storage, backing up would require attaching each server to a robotic backup system and perform backups periodically one after the other. All these benefits of a centralized storage system amount to improved availability for all services provided by systems in the data centre. The design and concepts employed ensure that there is no central point of failure and separate components of the system can be fixed, replaced or upgraded without downtime.
